Performing Arts are valued at Ffynone as they have such a positive impact on the individual. Apart from being enjoyable, they help build confidence and self-esteem, improve focus and concentration, and contribute to better physical and mental health.
Music
Music is part and parcel of Ffynone life. The department is vibrant, and pupils are encouraged to take up an instrument and/or singing tuition. Those who already play can join the orchestra, string ensemble, brass ensemble, choir, guitar ensemble or smaller varied chamber groups, or music theatre. Musicians and singers alike can showcase their talent in the many concerts that punctuate the academic year. They also get the chance to enter ABRSM music exams, encouraged by their peripatetic teachers.
Afym
Instrumentalists are given the opportunity to take part in the annual Abertawe Festival for Young Musicians (AFYM) to develop their performance skills, where they benefit from constructive feedback from professional adjudicators.
In addition, regular visits are organised by the Music department to take pupils to extra-curricular concerts in local concert venues.
Musical Theatre
Musical theatre is undoubtedly one of the strengths of Ffynone and the annual production of popular musicals in February is of a high standard and showcases the acting and singing talent of all involved.
A two-day residential off-site (recently St Madoc) a few months prior to the show is invaluable to the final performance. During those two days, pupils go through the script in its entirety, start to learn songs and scenes are staged.
Being part of a cast builds co-operation, teamwork and friendship among pupils. The skills they gain by standing up in front of an audience – whether performing, singing, or playing an instrument – will last them a lifetime and stand them in good stead in any walk of life they choose in the future.
The Performing Arts Department usually organises a trip to watch a show during activity week, at the beginning of July. In the past, we have had the opportunity to watch shows, particularly West End musicals in London.
