Since opening in 1973, Ffynone has remained true to the values and ethos at the heart of our school. We are proud to be a friendly, welcoming school where smaller class sizes allow us to know, support and encourage every pupil as an individual – where individuals matter, every step of the way.
Our ethos
We teach and learn in an environment of mutual respect, promote high standards of integrity and achievement, and encourage all to participate in activities to the full. Ffynone House is a family school and we pride ourselves in knowing our students’ strengths, needs and their aspirations. We strive to enable all our students to achieve outstanding academic success and also to provide opportunities to develop their character and personality so that they are fully prepared for life after school.
Our values
- Integrity – Through adherence to moral values and principles
- Respect – By valuing and having consideration for others
- Achievement – By enabling and encouraging continuous effort and development
- Involvement – Through inclusivity and collective enthusiasm to succeed
“Pupils thrive in the friendly atmosphere and benefit from the inclusive, family ethos and the high levels of support they receive. Across the school, pupils enjoy learning and develop positive working relationships with their teachers. Most pupils feel safe and secure at school. They know who to turn to if they are unhappy and they recognise that the school deals effectively with any concerns they may have”.

Our examination results
Ffynone families know that we add educational value above and beyond what is usually expected in a school. Staff nurture and mentor students to achieve their true potential, often far exceeding parents’ initial expectations. We are delighted with individual successes at the highest level of attainment. Similarly, we celebrate the achievements of those who exceed their targets. This reflects their total dedication, determination and sheer effort.

Inside the classroom
Small classes
At Ffynone, the average year groups are between 15-20 students – sometimes smaller – at Key Stages 3 and 4.
Specialist, experienced and dedicated staff
All teachers at Ffynone have years of experience and are specialists in their field. Pupils know they can get help not only in the classroom but outside of lessons too.
Technology in (and outside) the classroom
Most classrooms are equipped with the state-of-the-art Promethean interactive whiteboards, and teachers use Teams effectively to post resources, (convenient to catch up on missed lessons), and homework. It is also an excellent tool of communication between pupils and teachers.
Outside the classroom
Enhanced learning with educational visits
Educational visits are organised regularly in many subjects and occasionally, visitors come to the school to give talks on an array of topics.
Sport & Fitness
Pupils take advantage of the nearby university sporting facilities for PE lessons and take part in numerous sporting fixtures.
Ffynone in the community
Ffynone being a charitable trust, the links between the school and the community are strong, particularly with St James’ Church opposite the school and the many charities Ffynone supports.
Extra-curricular activities
Ffynone House School prides itself on giving students of all ages many opportunities to develop their skills or knowledge on a variety of topics and fields. These areas range from DofE, sport, teambuilding, instrument tuition, LAMDA tuition, visits to universities, to concerts, yearly Performing Arts residentials, and competitions in numerous subjects.
